Life || New Life

Gardening runs in my family. As far back as I can remember, my dad and Grandpa would compete to see who could have their garden in the ground first. A few years ago I finally had a place of my own where I could join the game.

In the Black Hills putting in your garden early is always a crap shoot. April, May and even June can  fickle. Last winter I heard a story on NPR about cold-frame gardening. I was so intrigued that I spent a number of days researching cold-frames. Cold-frames have become the game-changer. (I do consider it cheating but I still like to tease both my dad and Grandpa when I have things growing long before they even think about planting.

Last weekend Jake and I planted one cold-frame, started seedlings and a couple of container gardens. We really wondered if it wasn’t a little (or maybe a lot!) early but with the record temps forecasted for the week we figured the worst would be that we would have to replant if they all freeze.

This past week exceeded the weather forecasts. We set multiple records and got a few sunburns to boot. It was beautiful and perfect for growing new life! In fact, the cold frames had to be cracked open most days because they were getting too warm inside. We had to be extra diligent about watering them because our weather was more like July then March.

I knew the cold-frames would get stuff sprouting but imagine my surprise when I looked in to water Thursday evening and saw this…

Only five days after planting we had life! You’d think after thirty-some years of being around gardens I’d quit being excited and surprised when things grow but I’m always amazed, grateful and very excited! It’s definitely a miracle. Of course, once I saw that the plants were sprouting I had to go check out the trees around our house.

More new life! And then I had to call my dad and rub it in, just a little!

Here’s to a great weekend! I hope you get to find a bit of new life in your backyard too!

Life || In Honor of Spring

In honor of having declared it Spring, yesterday was all about doing spring things! Amazingly the weather even got the memo and it was gorgeous. Jake and I squeezed in two hours on the bikes and while it was a tad chilly with some occasional squalls, by the end of the ride it was full on sunshine and blue skies.

Then as we were getting ready to grab some groceries I stumbled upon this recipe for Spring Biscotti. I just couldn’t resist! Biscotti are super easy to make and homemade ones are especially tasty. These ones are no different!

Enjoy!

Adventures || Making up for a 50k

This upcoming weekend was supposed to be my first 50k race, the Cool Trails 50k. Unfortunately, the race directors Robert and Linda Mathis were killed by a drunk driver on New Year’s Eve. Having heard that news and not being able to get any information on the status of the race I didn’t want to fly all the way to California find out so I cancelled the tickets and wrote the race off. Then this weekend I got an email from Elemental Running and Training that they will be taking over all the 2012 races that Robert and Linda had planned. Argh! Shoulda committed to the plane ticket I guess.

Since I won’t be racing this weekend I figured I better come up with another good race for the spring. While in Fort Collins over the weekend I stopped by Runner’s Roost to pick up a new pair of running shoes. They had flyers for the Horsetooth Half Marathon, which looks like a lot of fun. While it’s not a 50k trail run, the elevation profile looks like it’ll be more than enough pain. I also figured I’d add a few other races to the calendar to help with the running side of training for the Tough Mudder, which I’ll be taking on in June. These are all local — no flying involved –which means I’m more likely to get to do them.

April 22 – Horsetooth Half-Marathon, Fort Collins, CO

May 13 – Thoen Stone Seven Trail Run, Spearfish, SD

May 19 – La Frambois Island Mountain Bike Race, Pierre, SD

June 10 – Tough Mudder, Eagle Creek, CO

September 22 – Sundance 10k/50k Trail Run, Sundance, WY

Why the gap between June 10 and September 22? I’m kind of anticipating a busy fire season this summer and don’t want to drop a bunch of cash onto event fees that I’ll never attend. Although that’s a guaranteed way to have a fire! I also have a few other adventures I plan on tackling this summer with my family and those take precedence over any race. It looks like things are off to a good start for the 2012 race season.

Adventures || 31 Days of Adventure (30 Because I Started Late!)

As I was skimming through my Twitter posts yesterday afternoon while taking a study break, I saw one from Katie Levy over at Adventure Inspired about her first two days of #31Adventures. 2011 had a lackluster ending and 2012 has been off to a slow start here at the tiny cabin, mostly due to the illness I drug home from Minnesota and shared with the Cutie boy. At that point, on my last day of vacation, anything to do with adventure had me intrigued! (Especially if it would procrastinate my studying!)

After checking out Katie’s blog, I wandered on over to the 31 Days of Adventure website to see what the gig was. Each day for all of January, they will post a prompt that’s meant to challenge you. It’s all about finding adventure in your daily life. I remember a very special lady named Marcy telling me, as a teenager, that the only way to grow is to step outside your comfort zone, get out of the box you’re in and try something that makes you uncomfortable. As things are feeling a little stagnate and very comfortable, that’s a pretty good indicator that I’m not growing or becoming a greater person. I figured this makes for a perfect opportunity to let someone help be that catalyst.

Yesterday’s challenge, Day 2: Notice the Little Things.

Hmmm, okay, I’ll give it a shot. I was sitting at my kitchen table in the late afternoon, the house quiet with the napping of the dogs and the Cutie boy. I closed my eyes, relaxed and really listened. Living at the end of a dirt road in a box canyon makes for a pretty quiet location. The silence was tainted only by the occasional pop as the fireplace slowly consumed the cottonwood logs. I sat and listened and smiled.

Take just a second today and notice one thing around you. What experience did you have that you otherwise would have missed?

Home || Let the Planning Begin

Christmas is over, the New Year is almost upon us. This could mean a lot of things, but what arrived in the mail yesterday says it all.

“The Burpee’s Seed catalog! Oh joy!

Make no mistake, I love winter. I am a child born on one the coldest days of the year. This is not my cry for spring (or help as you might think). In fact, the current South Dakota winter is completely letting me down. Where is the snow and the cold? I’m not built for 50-degree Decembers. But I couldn’t help but get a little excited when I pulled it out of the mailbox. Planning a garden is a lot like planning a vacation. All the ideas you can toy with, the new flavors you can ponder, the new cultures you get to contemplate, oh the joys! And all without any commitment. Until you buy of course.
And I’m always looking for suggestions. So…this is where you guys come in!

Last year my new vegetable to try was kale. I’d never had it, never even contemplated eating it but at the last minute thought, what the heck, I hear lots of people talk about so I might as well give it a shot.And I LOVED it! Ah-Maz-Ing!!!

I only planted 6 plants so making things like Kale chips was a little challenging but we found lots of yummy recipes to experiment with. You can bet I’ll be planting a whole lot more this year. Of course I do the usual carrots, kohlrabi, lettuce, tomatoes, peppers gig but I’m looking for new awesome vegetables to add to my repertoire. What would you guys suggest I try planting this spring? What do you really love?

Let me know cuz it’s shopping time!

Happy Garden Dreaming!
